La Città Eterna

Upon arriving in Rome, I headed to The Yellow hostel to check in and leave my things. Unfortunately I was a few hours early for check-in. I left my luggage in the baggage room and headed out in search of the Coliseum, I figured I might as well get it out of the way. But, I couldn't find the way. They say all roads lead to Rome, but apparently not all roads in Rome lead to the Coliseum. It was hot and I was starving, so I gave up. I had a salami panino in a small restaurant and then headed back to the hostel. Once in my room, I met Maddie and Anthony, a Canadian couple doing a tour of Italy. I also met Maggie, another girl travelling on her own, also from Canada. I got my complimentary check-in drink (an ice cold Heineken), took a shower and had some much needed rest. 

Después de una incómoda travesía que incluyó dormir afuera del aeropuerto Paris-Beauvais en las heladas temperaturas de la campiña francesa y un viaje en la aerolinea más barata de Europa (imagínense un camión de 30 pesos pero en el aire), llegué sana y salva a Roma. Al llegar al hostal The Yellow me informaron que era demasiado temprano para registrarme así que dejé mis cosas en el cuarto de equipaje y me salí en busca del Coliseo. Caminé y caminé, con mi chamarra de pseudo cuero, bajo el hermoso sol Toscano, cámara y bolsa en el hombro y  mapa en mano y nunca di con el Coliseo. Me rendí - ya moría de hambre - y me senté a comer un panino de salami en un pequeño restaurante. Al fin regresé al hostal, me instalé en mi habitación y conocí a mis roomies: Maddie y Anthony, una parejita Canadiense haciendo un tour de Italia y a otra Canadiense, Maggie, una chica como yo, también viajando sola. Después de un rato me bañé y bajé a pedir mi bebida de bienvenida (¡gratis!), una Heineken bien fría.

The day after my arrival in Rome, I headed to the Vatican with Maggie, but I'll tell you about that later. The day after the Vatican, I finally found the Coliseum and paid 17 euros to get an audiguide along with my entrance ticket. 17 euros well spent. The Coliseum is amazing, walking around where the people of the great Roman empire once walked was absolutely priceless. The ticket was also valid for the Forum (the ruins of ancient Rome) so I walked over and explored the site as well. It was a hot day in Rome and I walked so much under the sun I got myself a sock tanline. I walked from the Forum to the Pantheon and from there to the Trevi fountain, then headed back to the hostel to rest for a bit. 

El día después de llegar a Roma fui al Vaticano con Maggie, pero les contaré sobre eso en otro post. 

El día después del Vaticano, por fin logré encontrar el Coliseo y pagué 17 euros para obtener un audioguía con mi entrada. Valieron mucho la pena esos 17 euros. El Coliseo es hermoso. Fue increíble caminar en un lugar que hace miles de años vivió el apogeo del gran Imperio Romano. Del Coliseo me crucé al Foro Romano, las ruinas de la antigua Roma. Caminé muchísimo ese día, pues el Foro es enorme y de ahí se me ocurrió caminar hasta el Pantheon y a la fuente de Trevi. Hacía mucho calor y mucho sol, quedé requemada y con un par de kilos menos (jaja no tanto). Después de la Fontana di Trevi regresé al hostal, me bañé y descansé un poco. 

In the evening, I had dinner with Maggie and then we headed out to meet Maddie and Anthony for a night tour with Rome(ing) Tours. The tour was really fun and I learned a lot about the history of the city and particularly about Bernini and his fountains. We stopped for a beer, went to the Spanish Steps (where the party was going strong at 10p.m.), visited the Piazza Navona and ended up at an Irish pub where my roomies and I sat to have another beer and chat for a while. The tour of course took me back to the Fontana di Trevi which - much to my surprise - turned out to be my absolute favorite sight in Rome. It's just so much more majestic than I imagined. I completely fell in love with it. And seeing it at night, all lit up and in good company made it even better. Before the pub, the tour guide took us to what he believes to be the best gelateria in Rome. I'm going to take his word for it because my banana and chocolate gelato was absolutely heavenly. 

Al anochecer fui a cenar con Maggie y después nos encontramos con Maddie y Anthony para tomar un tour nocturno con Rome(ing) Tours. El tour estuvo súper divertido y aprendí muchísimo sobre Bernini y sus fuentes. Pasamos por una cerveza, visitamos los lugares más importantes de Roma (y los más bonitos de noche) y terminamos en un pub, mis roomies y yo, platicando mientras bebíamos otra cerveza. El tour nos llevo a la Fontana di Trevi, la cual ya había visto de día. La fuente de Trevi fue sin duda mi cosa favorita de Roma. No esperaba algo tan grandioso y me enamoré. Verla en la noche, iluminada y junto a mis nuevos amigos me hizo amarla más. De ahí (y antes del pub) nos fuimos a la gelateria que según el guía es la mejor de Roma. Me compré un gelato (helado) de plátano y chocolate que aún puedo saborear. ¡Exquisito!

Rome is yet another big city. As I went to bed the night before my departure I began to really look forward to my next stop, the much smaller Firenze. Big cities can be overwhelming, but how can you possibly dislike Rome? After all, it's the original metropolis. 

Roma es otra de esas enormes ciudades. Al finalizar mi estancia en la Ciudad Eterna, ansiaba ya estar en Firenze, ya en una ciudad pequeña. Pero debo ser honesta, no hay ciudad como Roma. Después de todo, sin Roma no existirían esas otras metrópolis de hoy.
